Recorder Lesson 1 - B and A

This week marked my first recorder lesson with the primary 3s. I spent quite a while thinking about how I could make the lesson interesting for them. I was worried that because they were only going to learn 2 notes, they might not be very motivated.

So what I did was to write a song that involved the 2 notes and turn it into a musical game. We played it at the beginning of the lesson and by the end of the lessons, students would be able to play the song. I thought it worked out rather well because students did appear to have a sense of achievement by the end of the lesson. They weren’t just playing 2 random notes, they were playing a tune (be it a simple one) which they recognised.

This playing of a musical game was an idea that I got out of the Kodaly course. I’m glad that through the course, I am able to apply the concepts I’ve learnt. This includes the ability to create songs and games from scratch to fit various needs, rather than simply transferring songs and games that I’ve learnt from the course to the students.
