We started by singing High Low Chicka Low, with our hands following the height of the pitches. Then we tried singing the song while leaving out several words to practice inner hearing. Students worked in pairs to practice the clapping game. We discussed that the pitch of a note is how high or low the note is.
I got students to listen to 2 pitches to identify the higher or lower pitch.
Next, students listened to a series of notes to identify of the notes were getting higher or lower.
With their new understanding of pitch, students had to match the visual representation of pitch height (or melodic contours) to the song Hot Cross Buns.
Finally, students learnt to sing the song in solfege. Hopefully, this will help them learn the song more quickly on the recorder.
